Chapter 44

Dola did not sleep. As morning light beams bounce through the greenhouse, she continues drinking the wine she had found in the middle of the night and nibbles on berries from the bushes. The nerve of him. Thinking he has any effect on me. His charms are nowhere near sufficient enough to entice someone like me.

The old sapbat hangs in the branches of a tree bearing large purple and orange fruit. Its grey fur has the smallest sprinkling of black throughout, like the daintiest of ink peppering the foggy strands.

Dola thinks a moment before rattling off ideas, “Char? Mico?”

The sapbat peeks again, a deadpan of disapproval on his face.

One more idea pops out, “Gris?”

The sapbat’s eye closes peacefully, and he lets out a sleepy squeak with a long stretch of his wings.

Gris it is then.
